    Baby Watch 2008

Here's what I've seen around the feeders so far:

    3 House Finches
    2 Carolina Wrens
    2 White-Breasted Nuthatches
    2 House Sparrows

Still hoping for some Cardinals, Blue Jays, & woodpeckers in particular. :-)

    Re: Baby Watch 2008

Wow you have seen all that....spectacular..... I have been on the lookout......

Ok I have been having fun with baby starlings.....lol..now I know most wouldn't be impressed with this at all...but heh, I love the birds no one else will.

My landlord said to me today...." We saw about 5 birds on your window sill the other day".  I told her it is because I place raisins in a parade along the window sill for whover and the starlings like them and feed 'em to their young. ( A squirrel comes to my window almost every day looking for food too). It is so funny to watch a bird that is about the size of mom yet fatter looking and following her around with open mouth and loud call for food. They are here every day on my birdfeeder roof.  The babies (well or juveniles) look so lost sometimes. One today was even following a mourning dove it seemed for a bit. Just like an infant they don't know how to feed themselves. When watching from the other side of the window it seemed like mom was really shoving the food deep into baby's mouth. I realized though that if not placed far enough back the baby seems to drop it out of its mouth again. I love observing bird behaviors.

I am trying to see who is being born but some of the places I go to have been under construction which is ruining habitat Super Angry or there are too many fishermen or "unquiet" activities around.

    Re: Baby Watch 2008

I'm not yet sure if they are a type of finch or wren (yeah, still plowing through the newness of ID-ing), but there was a Momma and youngsters at my feeding area today.  The babies were fly-able, but still fluffy.  They could pick up their own food, but had much more fun following Momma around with open mouths and squeaking like crickets at her.  She was pretty frazzled trying to keep up with all three.  I had my tiny el-cheapo pair of mini-binoculars (twenty-five cents at a garage sale and not even worth that!) and was able to get a pretty good glimpse down a wide open baby mouth :)

Do baby cottontails count? The cottons I've been feeding since last fall have had BABIES (I'm so excited) and I got to peek into the nest yesterday! Five itty bitty fur-balls with HUGE EARS! I'm a bunny-grandma! One of them has a white star on his little forehead and I'm in love.  Can't wait to see when they start coming out and about!  I got a really nice pic, too!

I have had a few baby Junco's. It is cute to watch the moms teaching the babies and feeding them seeds. There is a robin making a nest in one of the deck trees.
