accipiter (maybe a hawk) new find--Indianapolis IN

Unknown accipiter --can anyone give clues without a photo?  Its solid medium gray underside and lack of underside barring or streaking has us puzzled.

SEEN:  06-12-08  7 p.m. Suburb of North Indianapolis Indiana backyard --standing on the ground with grackles and robins diving and screaming at it.  This area has some woodlands (maple, oak, walnut and beech) a 2 miles away--otherwise it is farmland and housing).  This suburb is gaining some maturity to its trees so there is a plethora of songbirds.

    HGT above ground:  11-12" Max.

COLOR:  Dark slate gray upper -- medium-gray throat, chest & belly.   From 40 feet away, underside was very consistently shaded no barring nor streaking on underside.  Unsure about the dark slate upper.

HEAD:  seemed slightly square at back   CROWN:  Yes. Raised slightly when other birds were attacking--dark slate or black from close to bill to back of head.  Nape was similar in shape to an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk or Cooper's Hawk.

WING:  Dark -- unknown flight shape.  Its back was to us as it disappeared too quickly low between houses before we could determine a flight pattern.

TAIL:  broad fan-shape and multiple bars (dark and light--maybe white)

I have looked at all juvenille & adult photos and do not see any resemblances.

I hope someone else has experienced the same type of siting.

Sounds like it might be a Cooper's Hawk, but without a picture it's hard to tell. By the way, accipiters are hawks.

How about a Northern Harrier? It doesn't quite match the whole description but there are not very many hawks that do not have barring or streaking.

Are you saying that the bird was 11-12" long?

Thanks for the N.Harrier Hawk suggestion.  Looking that one up in my guide book does make it a very close possibility.  I was missing the adult N.Harrier photo in the guide until this moment --and it is gray with light colored breast.   I hope the bird returns for a photo op.

Also I agree with Northern Harrier.

We had a first time visitor a couple of weeks ago and members on the forum ID it as a Coopers Hawk, did your bird look like this?

I don't agree with N. Harrier. I have seen quite a few walking the 300+ acres that surround my house. I have to say I haven't ever seen one raise its crown when being harrassed by other birds. Also -the white rump patch is quite noticeable when it flies away from you. I would think an accipiter.

Thanks for the extra insight--there definitely wasn't a white rump patch.

I would say -->that is the bird.  The size & shape are a match and the crown was just like this photo.  Thanks for the photo!

I guess I should not take the guide books so literally --- They show some hawks with a fanned tail in flight and others with folded tail feathers.  Since they showed a Cooper's Hawk with folded feathers-- I wasn't giving that choice as much weight.   Still wonder about the non-striped breast however.  Could have been the light--or is there a difference between Juvies and Adults?   Anyone know?

Yes, there is a difference in juvies and adults.
