    Sandpiper

I saw this flock on a mudflat in massachusetts. They did have a wing stripe but it was not prominant. Any idea what they are?

    Re: Sandpiper

The overall structure of the bird, along with the short bill, the rufous neck, and the white wingstripe you mentioned, look good for a breeding plumage Sanderling

    Re: Sandpiper

Could be, but don't breeding Sanderlings usually have much more white mottling on the mantle?   They just don't look quite right for Sanderling to me.  They are too uniformly brown above and I'm not seeing red on the throat. Again it may be my monitor.

I'm not sure what they are as the photo is not very detailed, but I was thinking more along the lines of breeding Semipalmated and Least sandpipers.  There may be a White-rumped in there too, cut off on the far left.

    Hard to say for sure.

It is a little tough to tell... as peeps are always difficult.  Even though I was told Sanderlings may be molting into non-breeding plumage already (May-Aug), I think those are Semipalamated Sandpipers.
