Hey all, I've been puzzled by a bird here in New Hampshire for quite some time... From afar, this looks like a crow and is about the size of a crow, though possibly a tiny bit smaller...  But this bird is all black except for it's neck and head, which is a very dark flat blue color and gives off the slightest dark green depending how the light hits it, except for the almighty crow!!!  And it's in my yard feeding on the ground  below the feeders...

 Any ideas, cuz I've searched everywhere's and my books don't have it and Thayer's Bird guide doesn't show anything close to it...   Maybe I'm just seeing colors that are not there... NADA!!

 I don't have a good enough lens to get a photo of it yet... Still saving $$$.$$

How much smaller than a crow is it?  It sounds like a Common Grackle.

Any kind of a photo would help.

Well Nancy, I think your right...    As I just looked at my Sibley's Guide, and sure enough it's in there... Though this one does't have all the blue of the pics I just seen but everything else says Grackle..  The bird is about 30-40' feet away and with a wide angle lens, (EF 17-40 mm) I'm not able to get close enough..  

Funny thing is, I had looked up that bird online a few weeks ago and didn't make the connection and forgot about it... My search cryterias must have been off today, as it didn't come up....

Hi Norman,

It is definitley a grackle.  I think I had about a dozen at my feeder last evening.  We have a couple of familes still hanging around - boy can they go through the food and suet!

Nice photo.  Glad you were able to get your new lens - we're looking forward to seeing more photos from you!

Thank you Nancy... Just getting used to it and the TC is due in a few days hopefully...  Now for Xmas, all I need is a tripod or Monopod and I have those in my Amazon Wish List.... lol
