    Dead Hawk

I'm fairly sure it's an immature Cooper's Hawk.  I thought it was too large for a sharp-shinned, but I'm no expert.  It clearly isn't a Buteo or falcon.  Location is Taunton, Massachusetts.

What do you suppose happened to him, anyway?  I figure he got caught hunting in another raptor's territory and paid the price, but it's just as likely a larger hawk simply got hungry.  I figure it's also possible he simply died and was scavenged or, perhaps, attacked prey too large to carry away and ate it on the ground, leaving himself vulnerable to foxes, cats, and coyotes.

Tail, what little was left of the body, talons-

Is the white tip to the tail more of a Cooper's trait?

Hard to tell but with the lenght of that tail I would say Coopers.
