    New Nikon DSLR

    OH praise be

my Canon packed a sad threw up a err 99 error  general error message for canon it seems but this error was serious.

I sold off all mt lenses and the broken camera body I received enough to purchase a new Nikon D60 10.2 MP body and I Have enough left left over to get a couple lenses. These are the lens I am looking at a nikor 55-200mm VR I can get a 70-300mm for the same price but it is non VR, a 1.4 X extender to give the 200 mm a little more reach if needed but as the nikon D60 has a crop factor of 1.5 that effectively makes the 200mm a 300mm (35 mm standard) and the other lens that I had with the canon was a Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 this was a very sharp lens and great for portraits and pets etc so that is the other lens I am looking at.

So by the end of the week I should be back in business Big Smile Stick out tongue Yes

    Re: New Nikon DSLR

Congrats on the new Nikon. The 1.4 converter will probably only work in the manual mode with either the 55-200mm VR or the 70-300mm. My advice {which isn't worth much} is to spend the extra money and get the 70-300mm VR lens. You will be much happier with it than the 70-300 without VR.

I totally agree with that about the 300mm I have decided that I will go with the 55-200mm VR for the time being as money is a very big issue with us fixed incomes are never enough to go round and I will save my pennies and see about getting a 400mm VR at a later date but I will get the the sigma 28-70 mm Dg now very impressed with that lens may look at the nikor equal to it and compare. New body would like to if at all possible stick with decent lens  with VR as much as finances will permit. the 1.4 extender is still very much up in the air at present and will more than likely be a no-go as I said with the crop factor the 55-200mm in 35mm  values would be 82.5 - 300mm,

There is one other thing your advice is worth alot.

    Re: New Nikon DSLR

I know what you mean about being on a fixed income. I am on one myself. A couple of yearw ago, I bought an old film lens 400mm F5.6 prime lens that I use. Its a Tokina AT-X SD AF 400 Close Focus F5.6. I think I paid $300 for it. Nikon will cost you a whole lot more money. Here are a couple of shots I took to show you how the lens captures the image. These were taken "handheld" no tripod. I have more shots, but, they are not bird related so I won't put them on this site. If you want to see them you can email me @ raptrlvr@aol.com.

    1/250 f8 ISO 100

    1/350 f5.6 ISO 100

The top lens is my 70-300 nikon VR

The bottom is the Tokina 400mm f5.6

    Re: New Nikon DSLR

Congratulations on your new camera!  (I'm always glad to see someone "come over from the dark side.")  I've been shooting w/ Nikon for a long time, starting w/ an FE, then a D70 and an F100 and now w/ a D80.  And I can still use the lenses that I bought for my FE on my D80--although I find that I really enjoy having autofocus available...  At any rate, I look forward to hearing how you like your new camera!

And since I've been enjoying your images over the past couple of days (when I found this site), I'm also hoping that you can give me some feedback on my images.  I've never seriously focused on birds before, so I've got a lot to learn.

    Again, congratulations!

    Re: New Nikon DSLR

Alissa, you are certainly in the right area to get a lot of good bird shots. I have spent many a day in the "BackBay" of Newport Beach prior to moving to "paradise" better known as New Mexico. Its pretty awesome to be able to use all the old lens that Nikon has put out over all these years. I shoot with a Nikon D200.
