    Re: Common Merganser

I was watching this duck...both the female and the males for a bit today. I cannot help myself but everytime I see the female appear I start laughing.Cool Those reddish "locks" of hair swept backward and frozen in place give the illusion that she is constantly facing into the wind. It also looks a bit like a bad hair day. I am a wash and go kind of woman but it makes me think of  women who spend a lot of time styling their hair and then go outside into the "wrong" kind of weather and then they end up looking like the female merganser.

Yeah I just getta kick out of it!

The other thing too I have considered is why some species have the same appearance for both female and male and others do not. Like this one....this is a pair that has more contrast (except for when he is pre-adult male) than any other duck it seems.

I kept seeing female mergansers several months ago and then I was wondering where all the males happened to be. All of them could not have been mistaken for pre-adult males. Anyway, I see them float along by one another and it just looks like a funny match (and I am one who loves diversity). The males body is so white and that "gel slick back" head of his is so different from hers. They strike me too 'cause they are one of the larger size ducks.

Now I gotta check out what the baby mergansers look like......

They are funny looking aren't they!  I've only seen the Common Merganser in my field guide but I recently saw my first Hooded Merganser and talk about funny headdresses!  He dove under before I could get a picture of him though

    Re: Common Merganser

That's funny that you mention this....I was watching a male hooded merganser the other day. I don't see them as often as the common species. Anyway, it was diving and I was simply waiting for it to surface again with binos in hand. At one time it stayed under for what seemed like forever. *poof*, it was gone and I couldn't find it. Either the lake swallowed it up or the fish was bigger than it perhaps. Or just maybe when I looked the other way momentarily, it flew into the sky or swam further off.

These diver ducks usually come up eventually though and you could get your second chance at a pic!

    Re: Common Merganser

That was this one did.  There was a baby duck there too and they both just ducked (no pun intended) under the water and I never saw them again.  There was brush and logs they could have gotten under to hide but it sure seemed like they just vanished into thin air

    Re: Common Merganser

On the hooded mergansers...I have seen a few pairs around. There is this one spot I keep seeing a pair and it is right at the water/lakeshore point. I wonder if they have a nest there. Now her "hair" is a little more "coifed and refined" ....lol.

Still get caught up in the visual appearances of some of these ducks...they are another unique version of the same species. The pairs sure seem to stick together and it made me wonder what it is like for them during hunting season when one of the pair might be shot down.
