Great website! Love it. Just wanted to add: Long-tailed ducks are usually known as Oldsquaws. Up here in Canada, at least. :)

    Re: Long-tailed Duck

You are partially correct, Oldsquaw. The old name for Long-tailed Duck was Oldsquaw, but they recently changed it to Long-tailed Duck, but many people still call them by their old names.

By the way, welcome to WhatBird! I hope you feel at home here, this is a great site with many friendly members!

    Re: Long-tailed Duck

Yeah, they have been know here by that name as well. Recently I was at a nature center that had all species of ducks found around NYS mounted high up on the walls near the ceiling.

Long Tail/ Oldsquaw duck is one of my favs and the name sign next to these did still say Oldsquaw. I asked about it though and they told me that Audobon changes names every so often and that the name was changed about 4 years ago.

Maybe in Canada you have your own guidelines and names???
