    Re: Streak-backed Oriole

    The illustration for this bird is very poor and misleading.  In particular it has been drawn with a Hooded Oriole's bill.  One of the key field marks of Streak-backed Oriole is the straight upper mandible and broad base to the bill, neither of which this bird has.  Also note the differences in the bill between the flying and perched bird.  What is up with that?  The flying bird has a tanager bill.  Finally, in northern races of Streak-backed Oriole another key feature is that the brightest orange part of the head is the malar region.  Again, this is misrepresented in the figure.

    i hate to bite the hand that feeds you, but Mitch if your guide is to gain any respect (or even usefulness) you need to hire real artists- who know birds-  to do your illustrations. the colors are so overblown, that they aren't useful for identification. the shapes are inacurrate...Too bad, because a good visual source would be a great addition to this site. It ain't that your guys ain't trying... maybe you just got the wrong guys.

    Re: Streak-backed Oriole

    Just joined this site and this my first post. I wish to share something about this species;

    I have a property, (an acre), in a relatively rural area of the San Fernando Valley, by Los Angeles. The property has many trees, (mostly native Live Oak), and various beautiful bird species regularly nest here, finches, linnets, etc. This year I am excited to see Orioles nesting on the property. What is amazing is that there seems to be more than one pair, I believe two pair, who occasionally engage each other in the trees. I believe they are Streak Backed Orioles. The males are brilliantly colored with bright orange/red heads. They are magnificent. What is interesting is that the discrepancies you point out in the illustration were noticed by myself even before reading your post, the beak, etc. I watch them cavort through my home office window. Exciting stuff.

    Is there any other species that they could be? They do not look like any other type Oriole that might be local.
