I read an article about shooting white birds... i wanted to to retain the shadow areas of the egret...not blow out the whites...here you can see the problem picture, one of 175 taken with this same stupid setting....same result.. great feather detail.. nothing more.. wanna take a stab at fixing it, and telling me what process you used..? thanks for the help...i can post full size in gallery if that would help you do it.. let me know

start off with the raw image (the image from the camera take it into camera raw adjust the exposure to lighten it up a little

then you will have to take into photoshop use a some shadows and highlights filter adjust the levels alitte.

I did this with the one you posted but being low res it is hard to get good due to the noise if I went any further I would have to run a noise plugin and the image would loose details but with a raw image I could make some adjustments and make an action and that way you could do all 175 images in a mater of a few minutes photoshop will do it for you while you have a cup of coffee .along with what I would do to fix. but would need a full res image to work on here is what I did with the low res

Birdseye take a look at this thread I wrote on exposure zones http://www.whatbird.com/forums/forums/thread/81624.aspx

with that in mind when you meter your scene such as white birds I would use spot metering and meter on the whites and keep them with in the zones. What I mean by that is if you look at the image that I attached to the exposure zones thread just under the grey scale there is some vertical lines and numbers  when you look through your view finder you will see a similar thing .look through the view finder and move it about you will see that metering change. When shooting white objects if you can set your meter on a neutral color such as grass then lock that look at the lightest object and it is no more than a plus 4 then it will retain details I would try to expose so whites on birds are a plus 3 on that meter  the same goes for blacks at the other end no more than -4 but try for a -3 I hope that makes sense to you.

I will download your image in the gallery and see what I can do

what version of photoshop are you using ? and do you use bridge?

Added note send me one of the images the uploaded ones have been converted to BMP send to my email

I used Lightroom.  I simply lightened the shadows and brightened it some.
