Good hummer pictures are hard to come by in my neck of the desert, don't have a good backyard for it.  Wish I had a bunch to share....

I'm missing the purple in this one but the tail says it all.  Black-chinned after hatch year male.

The link below is one I took of my wife feeding our favorite Hummingbird, a female Anna's. After sipping the nectar from the flower, Mama Anna, as we call her, went to my wifes fingernails and checked them out one by one. At that point she was too close for me to photograph, about a foot away from me. She's our tamest by far. She seems to enjoy us talking to her up close as she feeds from our feeder.

Matt that's simply breathtaking you can see the tail feathers to ID it, how wonderful!

And birdbrain22 how can you be disappointed when you have them eating out of your hand? Silly, get a little cup and paint it red or purple and hold it in your hand - mama Anna will be on you in a flash!

Great shots! I don't have much luck with these guys, but here you go.  *EDIT: This picture was taken at Butterfly World in Coral Springs, Florida. They have many different types of hummers from all over the world flying around with the butterflys. I believe this to be a Rufous Hummingbird, but could be completely off base.

After hatch year female Anna's protecting her turf.  I was three inches away from a special shot.  Note the spider web used in nest building.  Being translucent, that webbing is also a mate attractant...

Don't get me started on hummingbirds. I have hundreds of photo's of them, but, I'll post this one I took this morning while I was on my back patio drinking coffee.

    Re: Hummingbirds in-action

This one won't win any prizes, but I rarely ever see a hummingbird so I don't have any other shots. This was taken this morning at the Patuxent Research Preserve in Maryland. (female Ruby-throated-pretty much all we have around here)
