I need someone to help me identify this lovely bird.  It was eating small sunflower chips in my back yard in central Arkansas on Sat. May 17.  I am thinking it must be a female since there aren't any exact matches on the WhatBird database.  Please help.  Thanks.

I'm by no means an expert but it looks like a Red-bellied woodpecker. I just found out last week how to tell the difference between the male and female. The male has red from its beak all the way back and the female has red from about the center of the head back. I couldn't tell for sure from the angle of the picture. If you find out for sure, please post it so I can better identify the next time. There are several woodpeckers that resemble yours. Here is a link that shows the male and female Red-bellied...

Thank you for helping me identify my woodpecker.  It does indeed look like the female Red Bellied Woodpecker.  I was thinking that that was the closest one but the head was wrong for the male pic that I found.

She went to the feeder 3 times yesterday morning, but I was only fast enough to grab the camera once.  If she comes back, I will try to get more pictures and I will post them.

Thanks again
