I felt sorry for the birds.  It was pouring rain so I set this dish of seed on the front porch so they could eat out of the rain.  I went to play in the puddles with my youngest daughters(5 & 3)  and my husband took pictures of us and these birds eating out of the dish not far from him.

In my experience, they will take it any way they can get it!  I have put food out spread on the railings, in dishes & bowls, & there are always takers!  :)
