Acorn Woodpeckers are strictly Western.

Try this. Look up Acorn Woodpecker in the Whatbird fieldguide. At the bottom of the page is a range map. You can always check the range of any bird this way. Also at the bottom left of the page is a section of similar birds, check if any of these match your bird. The first possiblity that comes to mind is Red-headed.
