Thanks so much. You are absolutely right. I found other photos of immature black-crowned night-herons to compare it with, and it's a match. The location and time of year is right too.

Someone posted a photo on a photography website and called it a 'Brown Heron'. It was taken near Cleveland, OH. Since I can't find anything here about a brown heron, I am wondering what it really is. Can anyone help with identification? http://www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=819040

Sorry I didn't list the location. It was taken a few years ago at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach, FL. It was very special to be able to witness the whole process. The nest was located in a Pond Apple tree quite near and below the boardwalk. We saw the eggs hatch.

This looks like the Nighthawk is trying to catch the dragonfly, but actually I think it was just an accident that the dragonfly flew into the frame as I was taking the picture. Taken at Duda Farm, Belle Glade, FL August 2009
