• Re: What is this?

It's a Dowitcher, and although it looks comparitively Short-billed, their range doesn't normally extend as far north as Fairbanks, although some migrating individuals can overshoot. Long-billed Dowitchers on the other hand do migrate as far north as the north slope, so in May this one could have been passing through on its way ...

  • Re: How can I attract more birds?

That's sure an improvement and you'll probably have better luck than before. Unfortunately general greenery in your immediate surroundings seems to be generally sparse, which is a big disadvantage. Someone suggested a water source which is always a good idea and should also help. Do let us know what turns up!

  • Re: What bird?

PoorMatty: Here's a house sparrow that matches this bird perfectly No, actually the eye doesn't match at all, and none of my own photos do either. In fact I've never personally noted a House Sparrow (out of tens and tens of thousands) that shows such a large, isolated, prominent eye - which is the first thing ...

  • Re: Birds En Masse

I agree that the huge flock size makes you think of Starlings, but picking out individual birds sitting on the wire the coloration, head shape, and bill length don't seem to look right for Starlings. Don't they look more like Brown-headed Cowbirds?

EHull9584:The chipping sparrow has a red crown that my bird does not have. It was another bird on the identification list. here is that pictureThe young bird lacks the adult's rufous crown. The fact that you had an adult Chipping Sparrow at the same feeder makes this ID even more secure.

  • Re: What bird?

I also thought of House Sparrow first because they are so common, but I think you have a hatch-year Chipping Sparrow here. Chipping Sparrow is very similar to Clay-colored. These are two very closely-related species of the same genus (Spizella). Female House Sparrow doesn't show prominent wing bars, the bill is not as ...

  • Re: Ducks and Coots

The other option is to simply start your own personal website - it doesn't have to be fancy and it's all menu-driven now and quite simple to set up. Then you won't have limitation on file size upload restrictions that many of the commercial sites impose. You can upoad anything you want to it and people can click on the link to your site ...

katbirdwatch: Sorry to be such a newb, but how would I do that? One easy way to do it is start a Flickr page. You post all your best pictures there, and then post the link to your Flickr page here.
