My guess would be that they are all Scaup (I'm not sure Greater vs Lesser) and that the ones with the white at the base of the bill are the females.

Did you see much of the coloring - when you say dark on top and light on the bottom I think of a Dark eyed Junco. Maybe try listening to that.
