It's hard. There are some Starling-proof suet feeders out there (look around with Google), but I have no personal experience.

Some Goldfinches just popped out of the nest. Seems later than prior years.

Yeah -- at this point I think Catbird, Mockingbird, and House Finch are all possibilities.

Can you describe the sound at all? Offhand, the Tufted Titmouse, Gray Catbird, and American Robin come to mind as possibilities.

I use one to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs. I'm sure it makes the water more visible to the birds as well, but the effect of this is hard to qualify.

I would imagine so, unless you're in Phoenix or something. I've used numerous no-melt varieties here in Virginia and have never had one melt.

Next guess is an Eastern Towhee. Sometimes there's only one note before the trill rather than two.
