This bird showed up today. I'm in SW Virginia

Taken near Frederick, MD. I thought Brown Thrasher. Didn't get a good look at the eyes. Any ideas?

I assumed it was a Purple, but wanted confirmation. It's my first one up-close and personal. Very exciting.

Interesting article.  My husband came home one day in mid-February all excited and swore he had just seen 2 bald eagles perched in a tree off I81 near the Shawsville exit. They have yellow legs, so ring-billed it is.  Everyone here feeds them and they go nuts when there is food! I love to watch them though.

Seen at  a Wal-Mart parking lot in SW VA.  Sorry for the bad pic, it was taken with my cell phone.  These birds are in all the shop parking lots in town.  There are tons of them.  They keep flying over my neighborhood.  Why are they here? I'm sure this isn't their normal habitat.

As far as I'm concerned the debate is over. I sent the photos to Anne Hobbs at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and she said without any doubt it is a Cooper's Hawk.
