If you want to listen to birds in the winter, do as I have done.
Place a microphone under an eave of your house (so it does no get wet), and run the wire into the house to the computer. In this way, one can listen to the birds sing and make other noises at my feeders.

RE: Cats. Once when my wife saw a cat going after a bird, my wife threw a rock at the cat. My daughter said, ''Mom, that is their nature.'' To which her mom replied, ''Well, it is my nature to throw rocks at cats going after birds.''

I agree about cats. I had two indoor cats, and ''adopted'' two more outdoor cats. When I found one of the cats had killed a Cardinal, I brought both of the outdoor cats indoors, where they will remain permanently. So now I have four indoor cats..
