• Re: dryer lint

Awesome suggestions! As it is, I leave the ''furminator'' results in the yard after I'm done brushing my dogs. I've got some old rope chew toys around here that are not safe anymore for the dogs to chew, so I think I'll pull some of those apart and scatter around in the shrubs and branches. How fun! Myhusband will wonder why I'm going around ...

  • Re: Common Ground-Dove

I agree with Common Ground Dove. The apparent smaller size of the birds in your picture, bill color, gray crown/nape, and pinkish underside; in addition to your location, would support the ID.

Hi Sandylee, Approximately what length do you cut the yarn segments? I'd love to try that!

  • Re: Bird call sound - wonka wonka?

Hi Sandylee, You got it! Pileated! And yep - the Sandhill cranes started passing us in early Feb, and a bunch of them were headed your way last week - hitching a ride on some really warm winds coming up from the south! Thanks!

OMG! PONYRCR -- THANK YOU!!!!! It's the Pileated!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! Oh, we had a pileated woodpecker pair visit an old rotting stump in our yard this past spring. And I can hear them way back in the woods drumming, and I am familiar with the typical call they make. I had no idea they made a different call. That's them! I ...

  • Re: Birdhouse Question

Hey Billkaye, Good luck with the nest box projects! Any plans of installing a ''nest cam'' and keeping watch? I'd love to have a nestbox project and have the diligence to keep records of nesting pairs. I tried bluebird boxes, and despite being the type that are supposed to be difficult for house sparrows to enter and placing at recommended ...

  • Re: Birds Rushing to the Store at the First Sign of Snow

Very cool, Johnthemon! I've heard there's been some wild weather down your way - hope you're safe! Send a couple Brown Thrashers up my way, will ya? I'm lucky to see one a year. I don't much care for snow. But without a doubt the up-side of any bad winter weather is that I can always count on the birds making a run on my feeders. My ...

  • Bird call sound - wonka wonka?

Well, I thought I'd post and see if anyone might be able to help me with a bird call sound that's been driving me nuts for a while. I don't have a recording, and I'm not sure if the way I'm going to describe what I heard will be of much value. But why not give it a shot! I'm located in central Indiana. First time I heard this bird (really ...

  • Re: Nest building in windowsil

How neat! I hope they are wrens, or something else that would be welcomed - and not a common House Sparrow. I like the idea of puttng out seed and a water source. I would recommend putting the food/water a little distance from the nest. You'll undoubtedly attract more birds to the food & water, and if it turns out you have ''good'' ...

  • Re: I need help identifying a bird from a feather

Oh, I have to add my few cents to this. I've seen only one owl in my entire life. It was a Barred Owl sitting in broad daylight on the neighboring farmer's fence. It was late December 2006, and I was passing the neighbor's farm on my way to an errand. I still can't believe my great luck, but the owl actually stayed in place long enough for me ...
