Mitch,  Unfortunately I will not be able to test the feature.  My handheld met a physical death and has not yet been replaced.  

The proxy was the problem.  When my laptop is connected via my home network, the update proceeded fine.   BTW, the first time I tried the update failed on the device.  I had to reset the device before it would work.  You might want to note that for future users.

What type of connection does it make? Obviously the updater can speak to the server to know that there are updates available. http and https are both open. If it uses ftp, then it would need socks support to get out.

I believe that ebird in their standard checklist does take into account the date in what it presents.
