• Re: Birds En Masse

paulsiu: I notice that black bird flocks may consist of several species of birds. At least when a large group black birds show up, I often get Starling, Grackles, and Red Wing Black birds. That's correct, and the mix can change depending on where you are. I took these pictures of a big flock a couple days ago in Maryland. On the wing, I ...

  • Re: Boyz (and girlz) in the hood.

Nice shots. I haven't encountered any that were thrilled about posing either.

  • Bird on a fat wire

Risking life and limb, I veered off on to the road shoulder once again with cars whizzing by, to dangle out the window and grab a couple shots of this Red-shouldered Hawk. I can't help myself, no matter how many of these guys I see.

  • Re: Lunch

Curlybird:Uhh, a falcon IS a raptor..................Raptor means ''bird of prey'', so I consider Falcons, Hawks, Ospreys, Kites, and Eagles as raptors. You're right. Vultures too.

nuissrf: And, so as not to leave the reaptors out ... That's a really nice clear shot. I've never been able to get anywhere near that close to one of these guys. They're always on a power line overhead and spook as soon as they see my car slowing down. I guess yours was up on a utility pole, so you must have a pretty nice lens.

  • Re: Are these Ring-Necked Ducks?

Ringnecks they are. I saw a flock of 50 or so yesterday here in Maryland.

  • Re: White Breasted Nuthatch

Very nice. I don't have a shot that clear of one of these guys with or without a window in between.

  • Re: Sparrow ID

PoorMatty:Yes, it's a seasonal thing. The entirety of the plumage gets duller for the winter, but the cap in particular becomes dark dusky with a pale stripe down the middle. Thanks. Good to know. It always seems a little odd to me that two birds of the same species sitting a few feet apart can be at such different stages of ...

  • Re: Lunch

Thanks. It's a great time of year to see these guys at this spot. People come from all over the country to photograph them. I counted over fifty photographers lined up along the river at the same time on Sunday, and most of them had lenses that made my little 300mm f4 look like a pea shooter. You would think all that commotion would bother the ...
