Thanks for the feedback, Birdbrain and Natureboy. My apologies, Birdbrain, I forgot to state the location: SF Bay Area. I've seen lots of Northern Harriers and this bird didn't look like one to me - there was no white rump and the tail didn't look as long as on the N Harriers.

The many Lesser Goldfinches have been as busy as ever today during a wet and blustery storm, but it looks to me like they've been joined by an American Goldfinch on the left - it is noticeably bigger, differently colored (brownish on the back, white underneath) with more prominent wingbars. Agree on the ID?
