• Re: the dreaded squirrels

Someone else posted about putting cayenne pepper in the bird feed. It doesn't bother the birds who have no taste buds, but the squirrels hate it. One poster said he saw a squirrel that after visiting the feeder was crawling on his belly wiping his face in the grass. That had to be a funny sight.

  • Purple martins

Saturday I witnessed the coolest thing. We ususally don't get a lot of martins around our yard. I'll see a few flying around feeeding from time to time, But Saturday there 100 or more that just swarmed around our yard for about 45 minutes. They would seemingly work the area above one Mamosa tree, work the other one for a while, move over toward ...

  • Re: Rice?

Aberrant: n2gzs You should consider buying a feeder designed to attract the birds that you'd like to observe. Some will allow smaller birds like finches and sparrows to feed while preventing larger birds like grackles from dominating. Here are some feeder types: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/pfw/AboutBirdsandFeeding/FeederTypes.htm I have ...

  • Re: Does anyone know what happened to the blackbirds?

Only thin I have at all are 3-4 mockingbirds, a few hummingbirds, and occasional cardinal, a pair of mourning doves and I saw a female house finch the other day. I filled my feeders over a week ago and they've barelly been touched. My robins are gone, the goldfinches, wrens, sparrows, starlings, grackles, thrashers, evrything's kinda dryed up.

  • Re: the dreaded squirrels

I have no problem popping them with a BB gun. Rabbits either for that matter. The world will never run out of either.

  • Re: Rice?

Yeah I used to use the cheap feed, but the grackles dominated my feeders and emptied them every two days, and scared away the more desirable birds. I started buying a higher grade feed that I get at Walmart (less filler, mostly BOSS, sunflower chips, safflower and peanuts), and I have less grackles. The mockers are dominating now, chasing off ...

  • Rice?

I read here in one of the threads a while back that uncooked rice attracted cardinals. It occurred to me later, however, that I remember being told that uncooked rice was bad for birds, which is why a lot of people now throw bird seed instead of rice at weddings. So which is correct?

  • Re: Cardinals adopted a cowbird.

You probably already know that cowbirds are brood parasites. They lay their eggs in other bird's nests.

  • Re: Unknown Hummingbird

Not that I'm doubting you, but why do none of those species show up on this website when you search under hummingbirds?
