I am only guessing, but do finches eat bugs besides the seed. Maybe at this time of year they find more of their food supply elsewhere and they leave the seed for awhile? (I have also been wondering why I see their numbers dwindle some at this time of year)

Hello! I just wanted to make a comment to Curlybird...I am also  in an apartment in the city and I have put out orange halves. I found that the house finches really love them. I also have an oriole feeder (he goes for that more than the orange)  and he comes every day. So, keep trying!  :)

Oh boy do I feel foolish...I wasn't even close in proximity or the  ID of the bird! I was looking at the object way over to the right edge of the pic at about the middle. It looked to me that there was a bird sitting on a branch. You said this wasn't shot in Florida? Where were you?  I'm just curious.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you don't have enough water out for them, but it very well could be that they are territorial with water as well as food, I guess.  I have a shallow dish of water out, but I only see the house finch using it.
