• Re: House Finches

I am only guessing, but do finches eat bugs besides the seed. Maybe at this time of year they find more of their food supply elsewhere and they leave the seed for awhile? (I have also been wondering why I see their numbers dwindle some at this time of year)

  • Re: injured goldfinch

Yes the goldfinch is indeed injured, we are going on 24 hours now since it was found on my deck. I really don't think it will be flying away, it appears to have a broken wing. I have tried feeding it water, first from a dropper and it took to that well. When she had enough she quit drinking. This afternoon I tried sunflower hearts( from my ...

  • injured goldfinch

When I came home from work yesterday, I had a goldfinch laying, injured, on my deck. I live on the 2nd story, so it must have flown into the patio window and injured itself. I figured it would die, then I would take care of it and that would be that. Well, it didn't die after several minutes and knowing nights have been pretty cool around ...

  • EARTH AND BIRD-FRIENDLY INSECT SPRAY!

I just read an interesting article at www.searchmonster.org/index.php?article=587 It talks about MINT being a natural nuero-toxin to wasps. So all of you who are having a problem with these kinds of pests, I think you might want to give this a try. The article even states you can spray mint mixed with rubbing alcohol ( 1 oz. pure mint ...

  • Just a humorous story

I wanted to share something funny that happened to me today. I have always heard that chickadees are friendly little things, and today I saw it first-hand! I stopped for a hamburger after work and was eating outside in my car so I could listen to my Joshua Bell CD. While I was eating, I noticed in the rear-view mirror, something ...

  • Re: Grapefruit

Hello! I just wanted to make a comment to Curlybird...I am also in an apartment in the city and I have put out orange halves. I found that the house finches really love them. I also have an oriole feeder (he goes for that more than the orange) and he comes every day. So, keep trying! :)

  • Re: Find that Bird - Round 11

Oh, I regret not exploring this area when we had the chance a bunch of years ago...we did pass by Lake Lure, what a beautiful area. Someday I will get there! Thanks for the info!

  • Re: Find that Bird - Round 11

Oh boy do I feel foolish...I wasn't even close in proximity or the ID of the bird! I was looking at the object way over to the right edge of the pic at about the middle. It looked to me that there was a bird sitting on a branch. You said this wasn't shot in Florida? Where were you? I'm just curious.

  • Re: Is this normal behavior?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you don't have enough water out for them, but it very well could be that they are territorial with water as well as food, I guess. I have a shallow dish of water out, but I only see the house finch using it.
