Black and White Bird

I've seen a Robin-sized bird that's mostly black and white that I can't identify to save my life. Similar in shape/size to a robin, dark gray upperparts with black hood and a darker/black streak in the middle of its tail. Belly and throat are white without marks, beak is yellow. White eyering, though it doesn't show up very well in the photos (which are not very good - only had my cell phone.) It looks oddly common; I was sure it was some kind of Robin, but I'm apparently wrong. but I can't find it in any bird books or on this site. Any ideas? It's driving me crazy.

Can anyone tell me exactly what kind of raptor this is? The picture was taken near Washington, DC in November, 2007 (in an IHOP parking lot...).

California mystery bird

I got four helpful replies to my last query. This is a bird I photographed on a trip to Southern California two years ago. I have a hunch it's a Western Grebe, but am not sure (and would like to be able to identify it to my local bird club when I show pictures Monday). Help!!!

Unknown accipiter --can anyone give clues without a photo? Its solid medium gray underside and lack of underside barring or streaking has us puzzled.

SEEN: 06-12-08 7 p.m. Suburb of North Indianapolis Indiana backyard --standing on the ground with grackles and robins diving and screaming at it. This area has some woodlands (maple, oak, walnut and beech) a 2 miles away--otherwise it is farmland and housing). This suburb is gaining some maturity to its trees so there is a plethora of songbirds.

HGT above ground: 11-12" Max.

COLOR: Dark slate gray upper -- medium-gray throat, chest & belly. From 40 feet away, underside was very consistently shaded no barring nor streaking on underside. Unsure about the dark slate upper.

HEAD: seemed slightly square at back CROWN: Yes. Raised slightly when other birds were attacking--dark slate or black from close to bill to back of head. Nape was similar in shape to an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk or Cooper's Hawk.

WING: Dark -- unknown flight shape. Its back was to us as it disappeared too quickly low between houses before we could determine a flight pattern.

TAIL: broad fan-shape and multiple bars (dark and light--maybe white)

I have looked at all juvenille & adult photos and do not see any resemblances.

I hope someone else has experienced the same type of siting.

I know they aren't the best of pictures but when I said say cheese he flew away:) He had a mate with him that was in the bushes. I am located in western PA. and live in a wooded area. I do have a bird feeder but he was most interested in the tree and hummingbird feeder. It's been driving me nuts not knowing what kind of bird and how to get him to stay around a bit longer.

Hello everyone. Can anyone identify this bird for me? This picture was taken this morning (05/30/09) in Santa Cruz, CA. We found the baby yesterday and, with instruction from local wildlife rescue, made a new "nest" as the baby can not fly and we don't know where the original nest is. Bringing it in at night for protection from cold and predators. Seems to be working so far. Parents are feeding regularly. I'm just curious as to what kind of bird it is. I don't know enough about them to figure it out.......Thanks!!!
