Black and Brown Nocturnal in Central, California

Hello, today while my mowing the lawn I noticed a bird sitting in the grass. The bird didn't become startled by the lawn mower. So I turned it off and walked over. The bird allowed me to pick it up. It is not a baby, not injured, and not in shock. At first I thought it might be in shock because of it's calmness but it is fully aware and curious about it's surroundings. I am trying to figure out what kind of bird it is so I know what food might be proper. The bird has a medium length black beak that is narrow, it is black with tiny dark brown spots on it's upper half, and dark brown feathers on the wings and in the tail. I know it is nocturnal because I have seen these types of birds in the neighborhood at night and never during the day.

I think this is either a female Brewer's Blackbird or a female Brown-headed Cowbird. Can you help me identify it? See photo "brown bird at PRNS" at upload photos. I haven't seen any male brown-headed cowbirds out there, but there are plenty of blackbirds. Thank You, Jim Rolka

Another 'bird I can hear but not see' question

I am in So. CA (suburban Riverside County). This bird(s) just appeared this week. It makes the same short whistle sound, that repeats every 2 seconds or so. This goes on for hours. Searched my guides and the Net but can't figure out what it is. Any ideas?

Bird ID Help, Rufous-crowned Sparrow?

I took this photo near Bodega Bay, California (north, coastal area). I'm not sure what the bird is. It seems to be some type of sparrow, and the Rufous-crowned seems close, but all the crest on this bird and the coloring seem a little too defined compared to what I've seen in photos... Can someone help clarify what type of bird this might be?

What species of raven do we have in San Diego(CA). The only one I can find that sounds like the ones I see around here is the chihuahuan raven. My bird book and all the web sites I've visited don't show its range as being anywhere in CA.

Hello everyone. Can anyone identify this bird for me? This picture was taken this morning (05/30/09) in Santa Cruz, CA. We found the baby yesterday and, with instruction from local wildlife rescue, made a new "nest" as the baby can not fly and we don't know where the original nest is. Bringing it in at night for protection from cold and predators. Seems to be working so far. Parents are feeding regularly. I'm just curious as to what kind of bird it is. I don't know enough about them to figure it out.......Thanks!!!
