Is this indeed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher? If so, it is a bit out of place in North Florida. They are normally found in South Florida at certain times of the year.

I've been trying to find out what kind of birds I saw landing in my neighbor's tree a couple weeks back. I didn't think much of it other than it was too cold to see robins because of the bitter temps we've been having this winter. Then I saw an article in the newspaper about how birds from Canada and the Arctic are here in New Jersey. Why? Because it's the coldest winter we've had in 25 years!

Now, I know that robins migrate back in the spring, first the males, then the females. These looked very much like female robins, only light in color. Since we've had a bunch of almost white robins in the area over the last couple years, I didn't think much about it until I saw the article.

Thinking back, they were light in color, even for female robins. And it was extremely cold. No hope for an early spring from that! They also were in a "flock" of about 8-10 birds. Their shape both in flight and while perched looked like robins. The color was off, but I chalked that up to bad eyesight and that the sun was behind them.

Now, having read the article in the paper about non-indigenous birds being in NJ, I think I was wrong about these birds. I know, I'm probably stupid for not grabbing my camera and not thinking more about the fact that robins would not come back if the weather was so bitter cold. Duh me! Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone could help me identify these birds. All the ones they mention in the article are not the birds I saw. And using this site to identify them has been very frustrating because it relies on location and these birds obviously aren't typically found in NJ.

So, any help would be great! Thanks so much!

Lg Bird, Bad Photo, Need Help!

If anyone can give me some idea of who this bird might be I would really appreciate the help.

This bird and I spotted (startled) each other at the same time. He barely touched the branch and took off. I had been photographing sparrows and couldn't focus fast enough to get a good shot of the big guy. The photos are way out of focus so any ideas are greatly appreciated.

SEEN: 06-12-08 7 p.m. Suburb of North Indianapolis Indiana backyard --standing on the ground with grackles and robins diving and screaming at it. This area has some woodlands (maple, oak, walnut and beech) a 2 miles away--otherwise it is farmland and housing). This suburb is gaining some maturity to its trees so there is a plethora of songbirds.

HGT above ground: 11-12" Max.

COLOR: Dark slate gray upper -- medium-gray throat, chest & belly. From 40 feet away, underside was very consistently shaded no barring nor streaking on underside. Unsure about the dark slate upper.

HEAD: seemed slightly square at back CROWN: Yes. Raised slightly when other birds were attacking--dark slate or black from close to bill to back of head. Nape was similar in shape to an adult Sharp-shinned Hawk or Cooper's Hawk.

WING: Dark -- unknown flight shape. Its back was to us as it disappeared too quickly low between houses before we could determine a flight pattern.

TAIL: broad fan-shape and multiple bars (dark and light--maybe white)

I have looked at all juvenille & adult photos and do not see any resemblances.

I hope someone else has experienced the same type of siting.

"Fancy" Black Pigeon? (pic added)

I need help identifying a large, unusual pigeon (I *think* it's a pigeon) I found in my driveway today (in Memphis, TN). He walks right up to people, so I'm assuming he's an escaped pet. He looks nothing like all our local pigeons and doves I've ever seen. One of his wings droops, so I'm also assuming he's injured.

He is about 10" long.

His coloring is black to dark gray, but with iridescent feathers on his chest.

He has feathers all the way around his claws; they have an almost furry-feet look to them.

When the feathers around his claws part you can see that the claws are dark red-ish.

His most distinguishing feature though is his "hair-style" :). All feathers are smoothed down along his body except a distinct ring around the back (nape) of his neck curls up - my husband and I were joking that it resembles the women's hair-do known as a "flip" (edges curled out).

Also, where would I advertise a "found" pet pigeon?

THANKS in advance for any ideas! :)

Help identifying bird....pic included.

Hello everyone. Can anyone identify this bird for me? This picture was taken this morning (05/30/09) in Santa Cruz, CA. We found the baby yesterday and, with instruction from local wildlife rescue, made a new "nest" as the baby can not fly and we don't know where the original nest is. Bringing it in at night for protection from cold and predators. Seems to be working so far. Parents are feeding regularly. I'm just curious as to what kind of bird it is. I don't know enough about them to figure it out.......Thanks!!!

Here's a link to the picture:

http://www.whatbird.com/forums/photos/home/picture41494.aspx

Here's a close up of the baby:

http://www.whatbird.com/forums/photos/home/picture41502.aspx

~Michelle~

gray-yellow 4-5" SE MN Bird to ID

I cannot figure out what this little one is. It has the body shape of a yellow warbler, however, it has a black crown.
