It seemed to be a darkish slate gray on its back and wings, but the light was not great. My impression was that it was about the size, and had similar wing shape to a nighthawk, though maybe not as sharply pointed or angled. Maybe it was the size of a crow, but wings were more narrow.. and obviously was not because of the white rump patch.

I've been looking up raptor like birds with white rump patches that might live around here. It definitely wasn't a flicker, and I don't THINK it was a marsh hawk, harrier. That sounds too big and too long tailed.. and it's not that big of an area. There aren't that many bird species in Vermont, and I don't live near the water. It's more of a forest, with a small wetland type area with black willow and cattails.. but it's not really a bog or marsh or swamp (I think it is an official Wetland, though) ( Not wet enough to have herons or bitterns or ducks)

  Any ideas anyone?

Unidentified injured bird

Bird was attacked by a stray cat. We've been nursing this little bird back to health for 2 weeks (so far). It will eat store-bought earthworms, mealworms and wild mulberries but only when handfed. Will not pick up food from ground. Will turn its nose up at cold food. Hasn't tried to fly yet. Has a badly broken leg. Hops a lot, loses its balance a lot, too.

In this video you can hear it squawk and see it perching:

Click here for the youtube video

I'm thinking it might be a wren or warbler. It is quite small, all black. Not sure if face was different color... cat removed the bird's mask, so it was red and raw when we found it. Appears to have scabbed over now.
We are located in a suburb in southern Illinois.

It cries out loudly every 2-3 hours all day long until it is fed. Eats a lot each time!

We gave it a stick to practice perching on its one good leg. It seems to like sitting on the stick and staying in one corner of its box..

Anyone know what kind it is? Is it fully grown? Are we feeding it properly? Is there anything else we can do to help it? Thanks in advance for the help!

Yellow mystery bird

My dad saw a small (bright) yellow bird near the Colwood racetrack by Victoria BC. Apparantly it was about 5 inches and almost compleatly yellow, he says the wings weren't yellow but he can't remember what colour they were. The area around there is mostly scrub and coniferous forest. He didn't see any other markings, and although his skill as a birder is ummm... nonexistant(sorry) nobody could miss the black cap on a male goldfinch so it most likely wasn't that. I'm thinking it was some sort of warbler?

Sorry for the vague discription.

Help please!

Unknown birds no pics.

Disneyland, CA. Small, slim, yellowish bird. A bit smaller then a sparrow. No markings I could see. Sorry i dont have anymore to go on but it flew away fast.

Southern CA: I kept seeing a bit larger then sparrow sized bird that seemed to have a rather long tail reletive to its body size. It was dark coloured, again, not alot to go on. Seen from a distance.

Finally, a small rich brown streaked sparrow, I think a song sparrow, just need conformation. Again southern CA.

I was walking through the trails at our resort when I spotted bright blue in some of the flowering bushes. There were two of these guys. They were quite shy, and I could only get this photo from far away before they took off. They were very large birds. They were also utterly gorgeous!

I could figure out the Melodious Blackbird, and many other birds that we saw, but these two continue to stump me!

help - black bird scarlet chest

I'm in the central Florida coast area and saw a bird this morning the same size, shape and color of a black bird--except that it had a beautiful scarlet red chest. No other colors anywhere and only the full chest was deep brilliant red--the rest (including head, beak, etc) was jet black. Not like the american robins we see here that are brown with orange-red chests--and redder than the cardinals. Wish I could have snapped a photo... any ideas as to what he could have been? Thanks for any help to identify him!

I.D for a Dundas Ontario bird needed

Forgive the long post but I wanted to be as detailed as possible.

Since colours are subjective it was about 3pm in the spring, fairly
bright day but was behind an apartment building so seemed more
overcast. the bird was seen on a grey concrete porch with black wrought
iron balustrade. There were two of them but they seemed identical so I
couldn't say if they were mates or the same genders. I admit I did not
get as close or as long a view as I would have liked but I did get to
see it for a few minutes while it was still from about 3-4 feet away so
I am fairly certain in most of my descriptions unless I've specified otherwise.

Location is Dundas, Hamilton Ontario Canada he area is a small town with lots of green space so still urban. Seen on a back porch in an area with several small houses and a few old pine trees. Woman on second floor has a feeder but I'm not sure it was there to eat.

Seemed about the size of a small chickadee or sparrow (The chickadees in my area are often very fat and look like a small round toy ball rather than an actual bird). Beak looked to be the same size as the head, at most an inch long. Black and very thin. looked at first glance like a very short hummingbird beak but on closer inspection it looked like a multipurpose beak but slimmer and sharper point. It didn't taper like dagger beaks do. (The main multipurpose beaks I've seen and known are on robins so you know what I'm picturing in comparison) Head was small and rounded and seemed a soft grey brown colour with a think white stripe across the eye. much thinner than chickadees and it didn't wider at all. it was straight from front ti back of the head. eyes appeared black or very dark brown.

Body was the same soft grey brown all over and it had thin black legs. it seemed to be a slim perching body shape but the tail was pointed up when the bird was standing rather than down following the slope of the back. was thin and seemed maybe half to 3/4 the length of the body including the head.

No idea if it makes any noise when I saw the bird it was completely silent.

The closest I've seen on the site is the five striped sparrow but there are too many differences like the second stripe under the eye and the multiple body colours.

Thanks you so much for any help you can give I've tried the bird searches on here and thus far can't find anything. I've never seen this bird before so it's really gnawing at me. I'll try and go back soon and see if I can't get some photographs to help with the identification.

yellow bird with white wing bars

Today I say a dull yellow bird with striking white wing bars (against dark wings) II seachd but I couldn't find it.
I saw what looked like a a yelowish bird on a walk yesterday. It had a beak and flight similar to a robin, except slightly smaller. This was in a semi urban area of Victoria BC at the end of January (09). It flew away as I walked past the tree it was in so I didn't get a very good look at it. Was it a yellow warbler?
