I am in SW Washington and saw a bright yellow bird with a bold black stripe down its throat and a black stripe back over the head..

I believe it also had a much smaller black stripe above the eye. It was almost as big as a robin and had a long pointed beak.

I have combed through the images and cannot find it. A very bright yellow with bold black markings. It is a very striking mystery bird at least twice as big as a gold finch. It was in my window feeder (sunflower seeds) but I startled it as I tried to get a closer look and a photo.

I get quite a variety of grossbeaks, but this one has a much longer, slimmer beak and the body is slimmer

Does this sound like your bird Marshgirl? Any ideas anyone? I have wondered if it is just passing through or lost?

Thanks, cc360

Help me Identify this bird

I need help !! bright day but was behind an apartment building so seemed more
overcast. the bird was seen on a grey concrete porch with black wrought
iron balustrade. There were two of them but they seemed identical so I
couldn't say if they were mates or the same genders. I admit I did not
get as close or as long a view as I would have liked but I did get to
see it for a few minutes while it was still from about 3-4 feet away so
I am fairly certain in most of my descriptions unless I've specified otherwise.

Location is Dundas, Hamilton Ontario Canada he area is a small town with lots of green space so still urban. Seen on a back porch in an area with several small houses and a few old pine trees. Woman on second floor has a feeder but I'm not sure it was there to eat.

Seemed about the size of a small chickadee or sparrow (The chickadees in my area are often very fat and look like a small round toy ball rather than an actual bird). Beak looked to be the same size as the head, at most an inch long. Black and very thin. looked at first glance like a very short hummingbird beak but on closer inspection it looked like a multipurpose beak but slimmer and sharper point. It didn't taper like dagger beaks do. (The main multipurpose beaks I've seen and known are on robins so you know what I'm picturing in comparison) Head was small and rounded and seemed a soft grey brown colour with a think white stripe across the eye. much thinner than chickadees and it didn't wider at all. it was straight from front ti back of the head. eyes appeared black or very dark brown.

Body was the same soft grey brown all over and it had thin black legs. it seemed to be a slim perching body shape but the tail was pointed up when the bird was standing rather than down following the slope of the back. was thin and seemed maybe half to 3/4 the length of the body including the head.

No idea if it makes any noise when I saw the bird it was completely silent.

The closest I've seen on the site is the five striped sparrow but there are too many differences like the second stripe under the eye and the multiple body colours.

Thanks you so much for any help you can give I've tried the bird searches on here and thus far can't find anything. I've never seen this bird before so it's really gnawing at me. I'll try and go back soon and see if I can't get some photographs to help with the identification.

strange bird - not indigenous

I have a question. I've been trying to find out what kind of birds I saw landing in my neighbor's tree a couple weeks back. I didn't think much of it other than it was too cold to see robins because of the bitter temps we've been having this winter. Then I saw an article in the newspaper about how birds from Canada and the Arctic are here in New Jersey. Why? Because it's the coldest winter we've had in 25 years!

Now, I know that robins migrate back in the spring, first the males, then the females. These looked very much like female robins, only light in color. Since we've had a bunch of almost white robins in the area over the last couple years, I didn't think much about it until I saw the article.

Thinking back, they were light in color, even for female robins. And it was extremely cold. No hope for an early spring from that! They also were in a "flock" of about 8-10 birds. Their shape both in flight and while perched looked like robins. The color was off, but I chalked that up to bad eyesight and that the sun was behind them.

Now, having read the article in the paper about non-indigenous birds being in NJ, I think I was wrong about these birds. I know, I'm probably stupid for not grabbing my camera and not thinking more about the fact that robins would not come back if the weather was so bitter cold. Duh me! Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone could help me identify these birds. All the ones they mention in the article are not the birds I saw. And using this site to identify them has been very frustrating because it relies on location and these birds obviously aren't typically found in NJ.

So, any help would be great! Thanks so much!

what kind of bird is this?

Hi Folks,
