My first reaction when seeing this bird was:

I have never seen a woodpecker on the ground before. Size of bird, bill and action using bill was all common with a woodpecker. This bird was brown in color. Had a red patch at nape, and a black band across chest. Was unable to get photo. He was seen in Eastern, Upper NY State. Can you help identify?

There was NO WHITE on this bird. Coloring was: different shades of brown with a black band across chest. Red patch on back of head area, not top of head or side, but nap area. (like back of neck)

help identifying bird

My first reaction when seeing this bird was:

The Woodpecker was not doing either. It was just sitting on a branch close by and not doing anything but watching everybody else eat. Again, this bird was the size of a small pigeon. It had a semi long neck, with a smooth silky head(all red), with a beck like the Northern Flicker I saw, maybe I bit longer.

BTW, I had talked with other people who have seen the Northern Flicker, I mentioned while talking about this one and its the size of a bird American Robin, 7-9 inches long. So the birds up here do not follow the size rules thats the bird books use.

I think both of these are hybrids, because the do not fit into the hole, that all the books talk about.

I am going to get a pic of the Northern Flicker, very soon and you will see what I am talking about. The other woodpecker, is going to be much harder to snap a pic of, because I only saw it once.

I think the pigeons and been busy around here, if ya know what I mean.

At about 9 inches he fits, but it looks like he does not get this far north, but mother nature is standing on her head this days and everything is just a little out of wack. Also, you say no woodpecker is all black and red, but what about hybrids, or do woodpeckers stick to their own particular group?

I have been watching a Northern Flicker that is 9-10 inches long, "tops" and it has a very defined black ring around its neck and a patch on its breast that is all black. Its patch is shaped like a "coat-of-arms". The patch is below the neck line and sits right in the middle of its breast. It sure looks like a Northern Flickers(red patch on the back of its head), but its looks a lot less scary than all the Northern Flickers, I've seen. I have the camera on the window ledge and I am waiting for the chance to take a nice picture of it. It been hanging around the neighbour since Oct. so I should be able to get a shot of it soon.

Thank you for your comment and it looks like you know your birds, judging by all your replies and if anybody can tell me what I saw it would be you. I am trying to get a pic of the Red-headed Bird, so please bare with me.

http://birdweb.org/birdweb/bird_details.aspx?id=276

It very very close, I guess it could be a hybrid white-headed woodpecker. It's the only one that really fits. The head did not look like a cardinal-head at all. This bird's head was completely red, no doubt about that. And the Breast was jet black. I only saw two colors, black and red, with a semi-long beak.

Thanks for your input.
