I don't know much about birds except that I love watching them. I have a bird feeder in my back yard (I live in the suburbs of Chicago). Usually the feeder attracts sparrows, cardinals, and grey doves. When I'm lucky I'll spot a robin prancing through the yard, or a woodpecker hanging on the bark of the tree. Today, I had two wonderful surprises. As I past my window I spotted something that, at first glance, appeared to be debris blown in by the wind. I thought it was a piece of a plastic recyling bag, as the color was a very bright blue. I was elated when I realized it was a little blue bird eating seeds off the ground. Unfortunately, I was only able to enjoy his presence for a short time as he was on his way in about a minutes time. Can anyone give me a clue as to what type of bird this was? His body was entirely blue and his body size and structure seemed to resemble that of a sparrow. Sorry, I didn't get much more than that.

My second surprise came less than a minute later. As my eyes searched for signs of the little blue bird, I realized that I had a second new visitor perched on my feeder. He had lots of black on the back of his body with white underfeathers and, I believe, some white mixed in toward his tail and maybe under his wings. He had a bright red throat and a yellow beak. His size and body shape were more along the lines of a robin. I've searched the web trying to find out who my visitors were, but didn't find anything definite. If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it very much!

Best regards,

This is my first time using the WhatBird Forums; hopefully this is done correctly...

I was out in my yard in McHenry Co., (North Central) Illinois, today, when I viewed a bird I have previously never seen. (to the extent of my awareness) I saw it sunbathing with its wings spread on the roof of my porch. It was small, about Chickadee size, and had a color pattern slightly resembling that of a Black-and-White Warbler, though instead of black, the wings had blue markings. I assume it is a Cerulean Warbler, but I would like somebody else to confirm it.

Thanks!

Yours in birding,

Blue and white feathers, rounded head, small beak, large eyes - looked at me! a good size larger than a blue bird, more size of blue jay but def. not a blue jay. Head was rounded and smooth. Lots more white on the body than I see in any picture. LONG tail and long blue wings on the sides, white on the main body. It hopped around alot on the ground - came near as I was rescuing an injured butterfly!

100_2614.jpg

Is this a Mountain Blue Bird?

blue feathers in the wings

Hi - I live in Houston, TX, and have been trying to identify a bird
that is common here and was also common when I lived in North Carolina.
I thought it was blue jay but now I do not think so. It does not seem
to have a crest and there is not a lot of blue on it but only a few blue feathers in the wings.
The rest is mostly gray with some lighter underparts. The size is about 8-9 inches.

It
lives and nests in the neighborhood near homes. There was a little one
fresh out of the nest last week literally on our door step. Adults
warned us against snakes near the house several times shrieking
persistently and flying close to the snake which we would not have
otherwise noticed. While it obviously protects its territory, it seems
to be a threat to other birds' nests. Last year, one hovered around a
dove's nest in our back yeard and then the dove's eggs mysteriously
disappeared. I also saw it on other occasions checking shrubs as if
looking for nests.

Can you please help me identify this bird? The several blue
feathers in the wings give it a distinctive look so I do not know why
it has been so hard to find it using bird identification on the
internet.

Thanks!

Lucy

New To Our Backyard Feeder... currently Unkown

[*-)] WHAT kind of Bird is this? Smaller than a Sparrow.
The little blue bird in a tree.

Bluebird with others

A little blue bird about the size of a finch.

Re: Blue bird, yellow bill

I have one of these little blue birds with a yellow beak also.
