I took pictures of these two woodpeckers at Magee Marsh in Northern Ohio on 10-4-08.  One is gray and one is black.  I have looked thru my bird books and the immature woodpecker pictures don't look anything like these.  would appreciate to know what they are. thanks! Karen here is the black one.

My first reaction when seeing this bird was: I have never seen a woodpecker on the ground before.  Size of bird, bill and action using bill was all common with a woodpecker.  This bird was brown in color.  Had a red patch at nape, and a black band across chest.  Was unable to get photo.  He was seen in Eastern, Upper NY ...

Hello, This bird was not the size of no crow, sorry.  Maybe the size of a Pigeon and the head was not shaped like a cardinal. Thanks for your input Neil

hello, I looked at the Gold finch of Nova Scotia and its looked like that, but had a lot more black, it was 50/50 Yellow and black, maybe 60/40 either way, but is was shaped like the finch. Thanks for your input. Neil
