I took pictures of these two woodpeckers at Magee Marsh in Northern Ohio on 10-4-08. One is gray and one is black. I have looked thru my bird books and the immature woodpecker pictures don't look anything like these. would appreciate to know what they are. thanks! Karen

My first reaction when seeing this bird was:
I have never seen a woodpecker on the ground before. Size of bird, bill and action using bill was all common with a woodpecker. This bird was brown in color. Had a red patch at nape, and a black band across chest. Was unable to get photo. He was seen in Eastern, Upper NY ...

hello, No its not that bird. This bird had a neck and it was not eating dog-berries. That afternoon, there had to be 30 birds out there. Some were eating the berries and some where eating the White balls that grow on the hedges.
The Woodpecker was not doing either. It was just sitting on a branch close by and not ...

hello, No its not that one. This bird was the size of a Pigeon. I was this bird about 2:00 in the afternoon, so lots of light.

Hello, This bird was not the size of no crow, sorry. Maybe the size of a Pigeon and the head was not shaped like a cardinal.

Hello, I have not given up looking through more lists of woodpecker and I have found another one, Red-bellied Woodpecker. Also, I have read that when u see a Pileated, there is no mistakening it for another type of woodpecker, so I have to disagree with the Pileated theory. Again this one's head was smooth, silky looking ...

hello, i have been looking through all the different types of woodpeckers and the closes one it the White-headed Woodpecker, here is a pic I found that looks like the bird, except the head it white. It's a dead ringer!!!

hello, I looked at the Gold finch of Nova Scotia and its looked like that, but had a lot more black, it was 50/50 Yellow and black, maybe 60/40 either way, but is was shaped like the finch.
