Thanks for the help, folks, but I believe the beak was lot longer and more hooked and the hole that was made in the windowsill is quite deep.

I I am new to this forum and would appreicate any help I can get in identifying a bird I saw this morning.. I was awoken to the sound of this hard tapping  and on investigation I found this black speckled bird, about the size of a pigeon, banging away on the window ledge of a back bedroom.
