This is a nest in a nest.  Last year we had barn swallows build their mud nest above our front door.  Even though we tried as much as possible to not use that door, the few times we did was enough to scare them off.   Now we have a new nest built in the other one.  I am guessing this is a house finch nest.  Not sure ...
