A couple Common Ravens stopped nearby when I sat at a picnic table today. This one had a couple white feathers above one eye. After picking up some of the larger rocks and putting them back down, one Raven started to break off little pieces of limestone to eat. I've never seen this before. It helps with digestion, I hear.

Wrapping up the Yellow Rails and Rice festival tomorrow. Another great year, the trips I was leading saw some great birds. Got my ABA 500, White-tailed Kite, a few days ago, and then got my world 700, Couch's Kingbird, right down the road! Also have had great Yellow Rail numbers, a Ruff (!!!), great looks at Le Conte's Sparrow, Ross's Goose, Sedge Wren, King, Virginia, Sora, etc., etc. Also, I caught a Black Rail! Last night I was fortunate enough to lead the Yellow Rails and Rice festival's first ever organized attempt at seeing a Black Rail. We were successful! We dragged lines through a field and I spotted one as it flushed and quickly got the butterfly net down over it, capturing the first ever Black Rail to be banded in Louisiana! First Black Rail I've ever actually seen! Also caught a Yellow Rail. Definitely one of the coolest things I've ever done Black Rail in hand by Jack Rogers, on Flickr

Not a very good picture, but probably my best from El Salvador -- a Great Kiskadee. This particular individual woke me up every morning by calling loudly right outside my room.

I shot my first owl yesterday evening! Getting an owl picture has been my photography goal for 2017. Here it is November and I had only seen one all year and no pictures to show for it. Yesterday close to evening my son landed his quad-copter in a pine tree. This Barred Owl flew in and perched right next to it, investigating the flashing lights, I suppose. It then flew and perched about 8 feet off the ground in a small hardwood and allowed me to get fairly close for a few pictures. The light was failing so I cranked the ISO, and exposed to the right to compensate for the backlight of the sky behind him. It's my first owl and I'm ecstatic!!
