  1. Hello, found some photos of birds taken from my vacation to London, UK, in June 2014. Can I get help with identifications. 1. common pochard? 2. common pochard? 3. common pochard or Redhead???? 4. juvenile eurasian coot? 5. juvenile eurasian coot? 6. fulvous whistling duck? 7. common crow? 8. any ideas??? it was in the background of a photo with coots and common pochard. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155142848605009.1073741991.683685008&type=1&l=eca3f72bbb Thanks in advance
  2. falcon?

Saw this bird in St. Catherines, Ontario today. Is it a type of falcon? https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155140525030009.1073741990.683685008&type=1&l=af51b2fb97 Thanks in advance
  3. long-tail ducks

@psweet Thank you. Yes they do usually look quite different this time of the year which is why the coloration is throwing me off. This is what I usually see: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155126123240009.1073741989.683685008&type=1&l=ee3f2cc6c1 But in the recent photos the dark ones look too dark to be females but the color doesn't look look right for the males, and the light colored one looks too white to be a female and the definition too well defined. I thought maybe juveniles or maybe morphing to the different coloration. We did have a minor warm spell -- I hope that didn't mess up the birds.
  4. sparrows

@The Bird Nuts Thank you for the explanations
  5. sparrows

Swamp sparrow, really? A new one for me, and here I almost tossed the photo.
  6. sparrows

Hello I saw these 2 sparrows in Whitby on Saturday 1. white-throated? 2. tree sparrow? I'm really starting to hate sparrows, only ones I can always identify are the house sparrows <sigh> I know I'll get the hang of it someday ... https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155125632650009.1073741988.683685008&type=1&l=a3b36304c4 Thanks in advance
  7. long-tail ducks

Hello, These were taken at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto yesterday. I'm 98% sure they are all long-tail ducks. Wondering more about sex, age, plumage. 1. male or female in breeding plumage? 2. The one with the very white head looks too white compared to other females that I've seen, it is actually a juvenile male??? 3. female in breeding plumage? https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155125631910009.1073741987.683685008&type=1&l=71772cabc1 Thank you in advance.
  8. American Black Ducks?

Hello, These were taken at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto yesterday. I'm pretty sure the first one (with the boards in the background) is an American Black Duck. Is the other as well? The bill looks to be more orange ... is it a hybrid? https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155125516555009.1073741986.683685008&type=1&l=818d6aec50 Thank you in advance.
  9. merlin?

    @geoffclarke Thanks for the explanation.
  10. Bird in flight

my immediate thought was flamingo based on the bill which looks to me to have the curve and a dark tip like a flamingo. But since i'm located in Toronto and i don't know anything about the wing patterns of flamingos or ibis for that matter, i guess I'm incorrect.
  11. merlin?

Saw this little guy at Ashbridges bay in Toronto yesterday. I believe it is the same bird in the 4 photos. It did not appear to be very large. Is it a merlin? https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155124566350009.1073741985.683685008&type=1&l=2bdad641ef Thanks in advance
  12. sparrow? type? (motion blur)

    Thanks @MerMaeve
  13. sparrow? type? (motion blur)

Hello, Went in search of snow buntings north east of Toronto but didn't see any. Did take this photo quickly as we went by so it is blurry but ... is it identifiable? sparrow? type? https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155119626350009.1073741984.683685008&type=1&l=07c0401e8b Thanks in advance
  14. glaucous gulls? NEW PHOTOS ADDED

Thanks for the response. I zoomed in on the photo once I got home. I have cropped more closely to the heads of each, hopefully that will help confirm the sightings.
  15. Hello, I took a couple of photos of gulls on an ice flow way in the distance today in Toronto. When I got home and took a closer look I could see that there were a few that were not ring-billed. Are they glaucous gulls? 1st photo I have circled 3 of them 2nd photo -- the one in the front https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10155054607060009.1073741983.683685008&type=1&l=b40540a73e Thanks
