  1. I went looking for a recently reported Harris Hawk (no luck). This small hawk gave me a good look, seems to have a beginning belly band, but it was very small and the banding on the tail has me a little confused. Thanks.

  7. ?Ibis vs Wood Stork

22 Jul 2017 Hale co., AL; commercial catfish ponds Hi, All-- I was on a road trip today and drove through an area with several commercial catfish operations. Around the edge of one of the ponds were 6-8 large birds that looked, from a distance, like ibises, but they had dark heads--not like any ibis I have seen in Alabama before--and more black on their wings--not just at the tip. Their bodies were white with pinkish-flecking. Of course, I did not have my camera with me. I did manage to get a shot with my phone, but only after they took flight. The first click of the shutter spooked them.

  19. Hi, We have never seen a rufous "in person". It was feeding on tropical milkweed and native scarlet sage. Today (1/1/2017) 0945 CST, Baldwin co., AL (northern Gulf Coast). Haven't posted in a while, so hopefully I have linked correcty: http://s1172.photobucket.com/user/floraphile/media/Birds/IMG_7371_ - Copy_zpschpdpn4j.jpg.html
  20. Hi, All-- May 11. Central Gulf Coast. Alabama. I don't have pics, but was hoping for clues. We were dining al fresco just before dusk yesterday evening and a small flock (a dozen or so) of tiny birds landed in a birch tree. They stayed there chattering for a few minutes--we thought because they wanted to visit the nearby feeders, but they never did, even after we went inside. The birds looked to be about chickadee size, but their vocalizations were not that of chickadees, and I am not sure if chickadees flock? It being near dusk, we could not discern colors or patterns. By the time I got my binoculars and camera, they had gone. Ideas?
  21. Hi, All-- Still learning. Pretty sure this is a House Finch, not Purple, but need confirmation. From reading the guides, the PF has more red on back and no brown streaking on flanks. Other important field marks I should look for? http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r579/floraphile/Birds/IMG_6378%20-%20Copy%20-%20Copy_zpskyaikzlh.jpg http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r579/floraphile/Birds/IMG_6376%20-%20Copy%20-%20Copy_zpskhum3f8a.jpg

  24. I live in northern Alabama. There is a bird in the tall trees behind my home that sings in the morning and evening. I have not seen it. But here is an audio recording. Sounds like "da, We-cha, We-cha, We-cha," repeated at 5 second intervals. I have tried two different bird song ID apps, but neither was successful. Please help me identify this bird. Thank you, Tom Irvine Madison, AL
