  2. Hello, my friend wanted me to look over his photos of a hawk which killed a rock dove. Here is his observation: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9505128 (Graphic content) I was for sure this was either a Cooper's or Sharpie, or any other Accipiter hawk. The photo is not very good, but I could still make it out. I wanted to know what your guys' thoughts were.

  5. Pacific West

Plannig a Road Trip with the family. It’s not a “birding” trip, but I will be able to stop whenever I want to bird along the trip, you know...since I’m the man of the house!!! (As long as it’s okay with my wife that is!!!! Most “birding stops” will be around 1-2 hours, so short and sweet. Except nation parks, and major stoping points, which I will have 1-4 days at each. My path is looking like the following: Start San diego, Drive to Las Vegas after work. Stay over night. Day 1: visit Vegas, Stay over night Day 2: drive to Salt Lake City, Utah...(any stops along the way, off of Interstate 15?) Stay over night. Day 3: Visit Salt Lake City, Stay Over night. (Local Birding Spots???) Day 4: Stay at Salt Lake?/or most likely head to Yellowstone National park trough Grand Tenton. Day 5: stay in Grand Tenton or Yellowstone (most likely YellowStone) Day 6-7: Visit Yellowstone Day 8: Drive to Spokane Washigton Day 9-12: Visit Spokane/idaho Day 13: Drive to Seattle. Day 14-15 Visit Seattle/Olympic National Park Day 16 Drive to Crater Lake, Oregon Day 17-18: Visit Crater Lake Day 19-21: Drive back to San Diego, or spend more time at other locations throughout the trip.

  10. Bald or Golden?

I can't tell. It seemed pretty big to me so bald eagle? Then again it could also be a golden eagle, since they are more common in my area. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SnkUf3pEWpxepgN40M3UX1Q34NUUqW0y/view?usp=sharing
  11. Swamp Sparrow?

Is this a swamp sparrow or something else? https://drive.google.com/file/d/13N7N_H047HDVZ05ANp-PqGQglJe57Suw/view?usp=sharing
  12. Hey everyone, got some shots of two ducks/geese in flight while testing out my new camera lens. Didn't realize until I went through my pictures later that I couldn't ID them. Sorry for the poor quality, this is at 1 to 1 crop of images taken at 500mm. Charleston Slough area, Mountain View, CA on July 17, 2017.
  13. Hi there, I took these pictures at the Point Lobos reserve, somewhere between the China Cove and Hidden Beach, in mid-August this year. After checking National Geographic Field Guide and browsing internet for the last few days I think it may be a Song Sparrow, but I will not be surprised if this is something else. It won't be the first time. (I also thought about Savannah Sparrow, but ruled it out as lacking a yellow eyebrow.) Hope someone can help me with ID. Thanks
  14. Loon

Attached is a picture of loons in califronia. I believe they all are Red-Throated Loons, please correct me if I’m wrong!! thank you!
  15. Hey there, I've been traveling all over California and I found this bird in the Wister Waterfowl Management Area near the Salton Sea back in April. I tried looking for birds that reside in it, but I haven't found much. I THINK this is a long billed curlew, but I'm not sure. Any help is highly appreciated.
  16. Hi! I need assistance identifying this juvenile that my friend rescued and passed onto me. Before the lectures on "rescuing" juveniles, this one is injured, there is a 1-2 cm wedge shaped cut/injury by it's tail. I just want to be able to feed it until I'm able to get it to a wildlife rehabilitation center that has the room for it, and it would be great to be able to tell them what I have. I have previously rescued house sparrows and pigeons, and have successfully fed them... this one is a bit different... besides not having the gape reflex (probably because it's older... but when I do shove food into its beak, it moves majority of the food out of its beak with it's tongue, I've been able to see it whip it out, it's surprisingly long. Based off it's beak and size, I'd guess it's a finch, but from I can tell, finches can be fed just like sparrows, so, I'm a little confused about how to ensure it takes in enough. I did try some mini-mealworms as well as left some cocktail/finch mix in its enclosure, no interest. I am currently attempting to feed it the Ensure parrot/bird hand feeding mix rolled into a ball. Any assistance offered would be appreciated. FYI, I've placed triple anti-biotic ointment in the open wound, there looks to be a pus filled blister that has formed near it, but besides that, the wound, while not closed, appears to have kind of scabbed over... no longer looks like an open/exposed wound, but dryish. Would like to include larger photos, but the file size is too large... hopefully what I uploaded is large enough

  19. Can someone help identify this bird? Here is the pic of the photo I took back in mid-July, 2012. Date: mid-July, 2012 [yes, it's an old pic] Location: Fremont, California [Mission Peak hike, most likely]
  20. I think this is a very dark - almost pitch black in certain light - version of a red tailed hawk. It is a screenshot from a video - in the video one can see a bit of reddish in the black on the back. It was perched not too far from a very dark red red tailed hawk at the Merced NWR, California. I have not seen hawks this dark before. Am I on the right track!
  21. Birding this past Saturday (2/18/2017) around 9 a.m. at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park in Napa, CA, we saw two separate flocks of large waterfowl that we could not identify at all. At one point, the two flocks came together, and we were able to get some decent pictures. On the right in this photo are five very similar looking birds, each mostly grey, white-rumped, with a dark stripe up the back of the neck, dark bills touching a clear white line at the front of the face, and with a knob above the base of the bill like a mute swan has. On the left is a group of 8 birds, all with bright orange bills and feet, with what looked like a dark morph, a white morph, and some hybrids. Close-ups of individuals from each group are found below. Group photo: Right group #1: Right group #2: Left group #1: Left group #2: Left group #3:
  22. Tiny shorebird identification

Saw this very tiny bird at Irvine Regional Park on Jan 31st. Im thinking western sandpiper or least sandpiper in their non-breeding plumage but I really have no idea. The bird was seen alone with no other shorebirds around. I'm still very new to shorebirds and learning. I included some closeups and then some with ducks next to it for size reference. Any help appreciated! https://www.flickr.com/gp/152085838@N08/2kU1Xu <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/gp/152085838@N08/nz6HeF" title="What Bird is this?"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3869/32469518680_713b029234_z.jpg" width="640" height="427" alt="What Bird is this?"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

  24. Shot this years ago, sorry they are not better...started a life list. Appreciate the help in advance. High desert habitat.
  25. So, I've never heard this animal noise before but I heard it tonight with my family outside my house. We believe it's a bird but we can't be sure because it's night and we couldn't figure out where it was. It seemed to get louder when we talked louder. There was also a cat outside curious about it who was wearing a bell (We know the cat was not making the noise). Any clue what it might be? I feel like it could be a baby or some released pet, but I have no idea. I've never identified bird sounds. Squawking Copy 2.m4a Squawking Copy.m4a
