Hi all, Saw some Scaup yesterday in Burlington, VT area. Still not comfortable with Lesser vs. Greater, though getting there. People in the local community seem to rely heavily on white on primaries (whether it extends to wing tip or not). But sounds like you can rely on head and neck shape and overall size. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1yWDVm5IoFzzqVgQiWynf1tz8Bc1ApVwl I have five Scaup pictures above. Two I think are an obvious Greater (it's labeled) and then three more with what I think is one Lesser in them due to its long neck, thinner/taller head and overall slightness compared to nearby Scaup. Does this look like a Lesser? Thanks, Graham
Hi all, Any ideas on Greater or Lesser? People were reporting Lesser at this spot in Hinesburg, VT these past few days (pic taken yesterday), but I'm not great at the difference between these two unless they are side by side. There is one pic next to a Solitary Sandpiper, but he/she is crouching a bit. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S36770824 Thanks, Graham
Sorry, this is a double post, but I really need this IDed before the end of the night.... Taken today in Fort Gordon, GA. http://www.flickr.com/photos/94730536@N07/9593838161/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/94730536@N07/9593839995/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/94730536@N07/9593838161/in/photostream/
This was taken today in Fort Gordon, GA. I can't tell if Greater or Lesser. All I can say is, I played the Lesser Yellowlegs call, song, and alarm call each for about 20 seconds each, and it stopped feeding to listen. Then I played Greater Yellowlegs call, song, and alarm call. During the Greater Yellowlegs alarm call it started running frantically and then took off, and uttered a 3 note call in the air. Please state your opinion! Thank you! http://www.flickr.com/photos/94730536@N07/9593841747/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/94730536@N07/9593839995/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/94730536@N07/9593838161/in/photostream/
