  1. Spotted an all pale-yellow/white on tree in Ohio. Can't find it anywhere - but photo quality is not great. Any ideas, expert birdwatchers? [Bad photo - from a video, but too big. It's the top solid pale-yellow bird. Yellow finch is below it, to the left.]
  2. The house finches that were identified here: Have been hanging out in the cedar tree all morning (building a nest?). Then this bird briefly joined the party. What is it?
  3. Southern Ohio in March We were sitting outside yesterday and the air was filled with chirping. There is one bird that I am most interested in - the bird that chirps from a low to a high pitch, like a peewit does (at 2 seconds, then again at 5 seconds) or is that all the same bird? Sounds like a car alarm. These are probably all common birds, but we have never been able to identify birds by the sound. bird_chirps.mp3
  4. small grey bird

This bird is occasionally seen hopping around on the patio feeding (on what?), but today was the first I ever got a decent photo. photo taken in southern Ohio in March. I really have no idea what type of bird this could be (guides were no help to us) we just call him "Grayson".
  5. possibly a sparrow?

Hi, We are trying to ID more birds that visit our yard. Today this pair landed and was working on finishing off our remaining crocus flowers. My best guess is some sort of sparrow, but I have no idea. I assume the orangish one is male and the other female. Location: Southwest Ohio When: today (3/16/2018) thanks!
  6. Possible goose call

My mom spotted what she initially thought to be a flock of geese tonight (December 12) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The flock, however, did not always follow the v formation, and whirled around erratically in loops around the neighborhood before trailing off instead of heading in one direction. They also did not sound like the normal geese we hear. Therein lies the mystery - what were these goose-sized birds? The video is no good except to listen to their strange, low dronelike call. Maybe that will help? 54A728A6-F8E6-4EF0-AB5B-2F06FA76842B.mp4
  7. I'm pretty confident this is a horned grebe, but I don't see enough of them to know 100%. Central Ohio 11/20 https://www.flickr.com/gp/147833620@N04/Bo481o
  8. I am not good at winter / non adult gull plumage. Are these first cycle ring-billed? Taken Central Ohio 11-19 https://www.flickr.com/gp/147833620@N04/52x346
  9. Green-winged Teal?

Sorry for the low quality, tight crop. Does this look good for a green-winged teal next to the shoveler? Central Ohio today https://www.flickr.com/gp/147833620@N04/TKuZh3
  10. Sparrow ID

I could use some feedback on these sparrows. I've got numbers 1-4 as swamp sparrows? and the last 3 as songs. Central Ohio, today https://www.flickr.com/gp/147833620@N04/FiF255
  11. Trumpeters?

They look like trumpeters, but I know that not all tundras have the yellow spot on the bill. No vocalizations. Central Ohio, 11-12-17 https://www.flickr.com/gp/147833620@N04/c02Z8d
  12. Juvenile Red-shouldered?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I never was good at juvenile hawk ID, but this is a Red-shouldered? Looks like it has the crescent shaped mark on the outer wings. Central Ohio, 11/11 https://www.flickr.com/photos/147833620@N04/albums/72157666244180559
  13. savannah sparrow?

Trying to learn my LBBs. Saw this bird at Margaret Peak Nature Preserve in Ohio, in a soybean field. I'm guessing it's a Savannah Sparrow?
  14. Bird call ID

This was taken at 5pm in Columbus OH in February, however I hear the bird call in mid-morning and I hear it frequently in the late Spring/early summer too. Can anyone help identify this bird? I've been trying forever and I think it's really common, but I just can't figure it out. Bird Call.m4a
  15. I need help on this one, seen June 11 at Oak Openings Park in Holland, Ohio.
  16. I saw this bird fighting a Bald Eagle in front of the Eagle's nest. I'm not sure of what type of bird it is. The photo was taken February 28, 2016 in Delaware, Ohio. I'm including two photos so you can compare the size of the eagle to the other bird. Any idea what type of bird this is? There were 2 fighting episodes. I'm pretty sure it was the same bird both times. I'm sorry the photos aren't better. Thanks, Sue
  17. Can you help me ID this bird by its song? It's been hanging around for a few weeks now, but I've never been able to catch a glimpse of it. The audio recording was taken on June 20 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (44221). It's in a residential neighborhood with lots of mature trees. The bird seems to stay hidden in the trees, and doesn't come to the backyard feeder. It's very vocal, though. Can you help? Thanks!New Recording 5.m4a
  18. I'm trying to identify the sing-songy bird that's in the background of this audio recording. The recording was taken June 20 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (44221). The bird has been very vocal for a few weeks now, but stays hidden in trees. I have not been able to visually catch a glimpse of it. It's in a residential neighborhood with lots of mature trees. Can you help? Thanks! New Recording 5.m4a
  19. Sparrow?

I think this is a sparrow? Saw a bunch in the bushes in Zanesville, Ohio in September of 2014....but which one?
  20. Help with Junco

Location: NE Ohio Date: December 3 2014 Sorry for the picture quality. It was through my dirty sliding glass door. So what are your thoughts on this Junco of mine? (ignore those bright white spots on the bird, they are seeds falling from above) The dark lores point me towards Pink-sided. But it also looks like it could be a first winter female Oregon. Please tell me what field marks you are using to ID. Thank you Marcia
  21. http://[imgur](http://i.imgur.com/it3uO9l) I rescued this baby bird, some kids at the park had it in a shoe-box, I took it and returned it to where they said they'd found it. Then sent them home. What kind of baby bird is this? He had long legs, looked like a roadrunner, but very small. He was tripping over his legs he was running around so fast. I gave links to his pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Found near Lima, Ohio. Nest seemed to be on the ground/on top of a tree trunk.
  22. On October 11, 2012 I spotted this bird while out shooting the usual suspects in the backyard in Beavercreek, OH. Not a great image as the bird was far away. Looks like some sort of Vireo or Warbler - Maybe a Warbling Vireo. Would like firm confirmation. Gray head, mostly gray upper feathers, white ring around eye, yellow underneath (but not on throat). Thank you!
  23. Virginia Rail perhaps??

I believe this to be an immature Virginia Rail, but would like some confirmation please?? I am in NW Ohio on the lake, just west of Magee Marsh and the Ottawa Wildlife Refuge. Have been here for 14 years when this pic was taken but had never seen one of these traipse through my yard next to my driveway. And I was able to get remarkably close to it. I'd say, within 4-5 feet. https://picasaweb.google.com/109491529358265594358/WhatBird?authkey=Gv1sRgCIXgjpSAgrjiTA#

Anyone interested in Ohio wildlife might consider following @OhioNature on Twitter, which compiles wildlife-related news from around the Buckeye state. (No agenda, just news.) Among other things, they'll be monitoring bird blogs and news related to issues of interest to birders (including migration, irruptions, etc).
  25. Please ID this bird.

I live in Ohio on the Fairfield and Hocking County border. This bird was just seen at my platform feeder. It waited until the male Cardinal was done feeding before it ate. Please ID this bird. Thank you in advance!
