  2. Hawk in So Cal

http://garden.cathrynhatfield.com/2017/07/a-hawk-in-the-rose-of-sharon/ My brother took these photos of a hawk in our yard this am. We live in Fountain Valley in Orange County California, about 3 miles from coast and near the Santa Ana River. Is he a red tail hawk ? That is just a guess, or something else. He was after a black and yellow bird's babies we think as she was squaking at him. But we also have many lizards in the yard. Help with ID please. Thank you.
  3. Hello- I’m an amateur photographer, beginner birder. I’ve photographed a lot of Red-tailed Hawks, and although these are lousy photos it seems there’s just something not quite right about it being a red-tail. I live in Southern Wisconsin and got these shots two days ago, 3/11, while hiking. This bird was actually near a Red-tailed Hawk when I first saw it, both in the air, roughly the same size. They were far off, and I assumed they were the same species until I downloaded the photos when I got home. I photographed both of them; the first one was very obviously a red-tail. It flew off, and I continued to photograph the one that flew closer to me which is the one in question. The species that came to mind first was the Rough-legged Hawk. Even though you can’t see much detail, I think there’s something weird about its face (as I'm used to red-tails and bald eagles)- maybe a small beak? It has a few of the physical characteristics of the rough-tail except it seems to be missing the dark tail band. I’m not sure if the shots where the sun was directly hitting its tail would make it difficult to see the band since it didn’t seem to do that with the wings. The bird does clearly have a dark band around its middle. I couldn’t crop any closer without losing detail, and the golden color is showing just before sunset. I would be pretty excited if I knew this was a Rough-legged . Thank you for your help.
  4. Juvenile hawk - my friends are split between red tailed or red shouldered. Sat just off our deck about 10-12' away for over an hour this morning in the rain watching the ground for ground feeders. Pretty tame as it was unmindful of us in the window taking photographs. Quite large. Ignored all the small birds on the feeders. Site: Southern WV home in large deciduous forest area.
  5. A variety of unknowns

Can someone help with these unknowns? I think the first few are a yellow warbler. Not sure what the ducks are. Possible falcon and probably a red tailed hawk. Female house finch??
  6. Can someone tell me if this is a Savannah sparrow? Is the gray bird a Bell's vireo? The last one is probably a red-tailed hawk. Can someone confirm?
  7. I don't think there's much question given the red tail, but would like confirmation. Thanks
