If you're curious about what species this is, the folks at bugguide.net are excellent and prompt, but very very terse and academic.

If you do submit a photo, they are sticklers for highly-cropped photos, so if you want to avoid getting yelled at, you'll have to crop this image even more!  :D

Where in California was it taken. It looks like an Autumn Meadowhawk, which as far as I know is the only meadowhawk with yellow legs (but I know eastern species better). They do have a specific range it the state though, even if they are super common in the east. 

There is a dragonfly section here too, just scroll down the page. Not super active but those of us there do our best to help.

UPDATE - I misread the history of the post, and now see the photo was taken much further east, and as such for sure this is an Autumn Meadowhawk.
