I went for a hike at a canyon today and, fittingly, saw a Canyon Wren.  It's a lifer for me!  It kept hopping between the rocks and shrubbery, so I have quite a lot of photos of it slightly out of focus or with a twig across it's face.

I think your purple gallinule might be a gray headed swamphen. I might have to check that spot out at the end of the this month. I would love to see one.

I went the the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix today, which is a great place.  Almost as soon as I arrived, I saw a pair of Gambel's Quail.  I also saw a number of hummingbirds, some of which seemed tamer than normal.  On my drive, I listened to David Attenborough's autobiography, and hearing about his adventures seeing exotic animals in distant parts of the world was a wonderful accompaniment to the trip.
