This one got explored today!

I actually took it in 2013, but only uploaded it today.

Again, I don't think it's one of my best shots though. I seriously don't understand, IMO I have so many better photos that are more worthy of explore. (not saying this one is bad, just saying this isn't really one of my best photos)

Explore is a computer algorithm that selects pictures working from a set of rules, no human ever sees those "explored" photos in the selection process.

I've had two in the last week. Both have been pretty lousy in terms of favorites, but that's not that big of a deal to me. I really like the first shot and don't like the second one at all (I only uploaded it to flickr so that I had a halfway decent picture of a quail on there).

That's an Orange-crowned Warbler, right?  Those and Tennessee can be tricky to tell apart.

Congrats on Explore by the way!  I just had another one make it in too.

A lot of it has to do with how many people favorite/comment on your shots and whether or not they're your followers or not, if I understood an article I read about it correctly. If multiple people who don't follow you favorite your shot or comment on it you're more likely to get explored. It's pretty easy to get explored if you get almost no favorites/comments and then all the sudden you get a few favorites or a few comments.

Also, posting your photos in groups is very helpful. It brings people to your photostream who don't follow you yet.

Explore is a computer algorithm that selects pictures working from a set of rules, no human ever sees those "explored" photos in the selection process.  It has has nothing to do with how many people favorite or comment, or how many groups a photo is in.  As a matter of fact, if a photo is in too many groups then it usually won't get explored.

According to this, the number of favorites/comments/number of groups its in does matter to an extent (among other things). "Although the algorithm is secret, Flickr has stated that many factors go into calculating Interestingness including: a photo's tags, how many groups the photo is in, views, favorites, where click-throughs are coming from, who comments on a photo and when, and more" From what I understand, if the people who are favoriting and commenting it is important -- if they're not your followers/people who don't favorite all of the pictures you upload, then it ups your odds of being explored. If you usually get no comments on a picture and you get 5 from various people, then you're odds are increased. Adding pictures to a few groups is helpful, but adding it to a bunch (40+ is my guess) drastically decreases your odds.

Obviously I don't know exactly how it works since it's not entirely public, but I've read several articles and that's pretty much what I've gathered.

Also, yes, the warbler is an Orange-crowned. I've never seen one with such extensive white on the undertail coverts but that's what it is (Tennessee should have more of a black eyeline, even more white, tend to be a more yellowish yellow than greenish yellow, etc.).

Yet another explore for me:

Certainly not an amazing picture, but I like it and am glad it got explored over the other pictures I uploaded recently. My 7th explore this year and 11th overall.

Nice! I had another explore last week. Not the greatest shot (horrible white balance, soft, underexposed etc.), but I'll take it.

Another explore for me. I think my California Gnatcatcher shot is better, but I'll live with this. ;)

Just check and they were both explored! Never had two in a day before.
