Terrible shorebird shot mouth of the Mississippi River

Recommended Posts

Took this terrible picture yesterday while elbow deep in a detritus filled seine sample where a small outflow of the river meets east bay. I know the quality is terrible and a positive id is unlikely but I figured I would give it a shot.

Bonus American avocets and black necked stilts for looking at the terrible picture and because they are cool.

Sanderling was my first thought too with the light face and shorter, straight, stout bill.

Thanks for that help  I think yall are right on.  Size would seem to fit based on the least sandpipers that were running around with it.

Ha! Only a terrible sanderling hang out on a sandbar covered in a foot of Mississippi river detritus.  It should be on the beach.
