Help ID'ing Sparrows

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I took these pictures today (July 16) in Lord Stirling Park, in New Jersey.

With the buffy chest and flanks, they look like (I think) Lincoln's, but Lincoln's shouldn't be here in July. Or are they Song, or Swamp ... ok, I'm lost ! Anyone who can help?

Thanks

Juvenile Melospiza like this aren't especially easy. This one's got a decent malar and there appears to be a median crown stripe, so I'd say Song. As you said, you shouldn't ever see Lincoln's in this plumage in New Jersey -- they molt out of it before they migrate.

Thanks psweet. Yes, this makes a lot of sense, juvenile Song Sparrows. What surprised me as well was that they were like 6 or 7 together, which I don't see with Songs; but of course, juveniles might flock more easily.

Ok, no photolifer today ... ;)
