Blue jays do not like the peanuts

Recommended Posts

I have been feeding blue jays whole peanuts for 6 years. I bought a new brand since it was cheaper. The birds fly to the feeder then leave or pick one up then spit it out. The peanuts are roasted and have a strong roasted smell. Why are they not taking any?

Welcome to WhatBird!

Were these peanuts sold as bird food? Normally birds are fed raw seeds, peanuts, etc. I would think the strong roasted smell is putting them off.

I feed mine roasted peanuts and have for years.  We go through a ton of them.  I am careful to make sure I get the unsalted ones.  Did you perhaps get salted and that is what they are rejecting?

That's odd. What brand are you buying?

I see several bluejays daily and a while back I bought a fifty pound bag of roasted peanuts for the first time (they smelled so good). The jays ate them right up. And they were from the feed mill so they were safe for birds. I read the roasted ones are easier for them to digest.

Anyway, when I ran out the local feed mill told me they don't have the big bags anymore because they weren't selling so I switched back to the regular peanuts. The jays don't seem to mind the switch. They eat peanuts all day long.

If I were you I'd try returning the bag you have and give that brand one more chance (with a new bag). If the jays don't touch them again then there's something wrong with that brand.

I thought I had answered Chaseman back when this was first posted, but I had no idea you could feed birds roasted peanuts, and I stand corrected!
