Squirrel proof / Auto close peanut (With shell) feeder?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, new here.

I've been struggling with squirrels getting at my  whole peanuts (With the shell). I've been feeding Blue jays and Cardinals with them, they can't get enough. And for a while, the squirrels didn't catch on. But now they know that I put a couple of whole peanuts on the tray of my caged tube feeder. I want to see if anyone here has ever heard of a squirrel proof, auto close mechanism tray feeder that can hold whole peanuts.

I don't want to feed too many little song birds, they tend to make a mess by pooping all over my balcony, I prefer to feed whole peanuts to Blue jays and Cardinals who just sit there for a moment, grab a peanut and fly away to eat it elsewhere.

Here's a little info about my set up.

I have a tube feeder with a cage over it which helps protect the seed inside of the tube from squirrels. The tube is great for feeding the little song birds But I also throw a couple of whole peanuts on the seed tray, which the Cardinals and blue jays can reach, But so can squirrels and so the cute fuzzy bastards have been stealing them from the tray every morning.

I want a simple weight activated, auto close feeder that can hold peanuts in the shell. I see plenty of feeders out there that can hold small seed or peanuts without the shell and are also auto close / squirrel proof, but I want one for whole peanuts.

Has anyone here ever seen such a feeder? Do they exist?

Please let me know if you know of any models out there that would suit my purpose.

Thank you!

If you take the plastic openings / perches off this feeder, are the resulting holes in the tube big enough to let the birds pull the peanuts out?  Can you find other caged tube feeders that could be adapted to dispense peanuts?

There's always the option to mount a platform feeder on a pole with a squirrel baffle, assuming you have an open area far enough from surfaces the 'tree rats' use as launch pads.
